  Management and Leadership Development Topics

Many executives, managers, and business owners have received no formal training to prepare them for their responsibilities. At the opposite extreme, even Ivy-MBA-bearing CEOs benefit by making a regular effort to develop and refine their skills. It's simply human nature to forget some of what we were once told. And whether or not we have appropriate training, when unfamiliar situations crop up we don't always automatically choose the best course of action. In most cases it helps to take a step back, consider options and best practices, and make a plan to move forward.

Wilson Strategies has a variety of key topics ready to facilitate, and we can prepare new topics for discussion as needed. We can also bring in various forms of feedback (such as 360 reviews) to improve awareness of personal management issues. Fortunately, almost all of the techniques used by good managers are simple and accessible to everyone. So much so that, to maximize commitment and participation, we ordinarily ask our clients to select the specific skills and techniques they want to improve on.

Examples of topics we have already researched, presented, and coached managers on include:

  • recruiting and retaining employees, partners, and customers
  • structuring work to get consistency without micromanagement
  • getting and giving feedback which encourages change while minimizing defensiveness
  • improving focus, clarity, direction, and motivation
  • reducing stress and increasing the emotional rewards of work and working relationships
  • strategies to revive employees from a slump
  • improving teamwork and follow-through
  • improving communication and working relationships between team members
  • guiding disagreements or conflicts into productive communication
  • appreciative inquiry exercises to shift a team from complaining to striving for successes
  • simple, concrete ways to improve business communication, including listening and feedback techniques
  • effective delegation, including overcoming internal and external obstacles to successful delegations
  • when to delegate to a certain person or group
  • choosing the decision-making style that will render the best results for a particular decision
  • the role of emotions in leadership -- translating empirical research (e.g. MRI brain studies and surveys) plus soft-skill best practices into simple, operational business strategies and techniques that dramatically affect both employees and customers
  • how to use consensus for group decisions
  • strong negotiation skills for people who want to avoid coming across as "bulldozers" and want to maintain healthy relationships with everyone at the table
  • how and when to use off-the-shelf feedback tools, including 360 reviews, leadership profiling tools, personal strengths or personality-type measures, and other population metrics in a management context
  • developing strategies for growth, productivity, and profitability
  • time management, managing up, and information delivery skills
  • balancing work and personal life
  • handling personal challenges or new career stages
  • how to help other managers learn all of these skills, so that they in turn can help others learn these skills.
